Avant de recevoir l’honneur d’avoir un arbuste magnifique dédié à son nom (Bougainvillae spectabilis), Louis-Antoine de Bougainville était militaire, aide de camp du général Montcalm, guerrier Iroquois, diplomate, interprète, mathématicien, géographe, avocat, et accessoirement un aristocrate français au premier rang de plusieurs batailles de la Guerre de Sept Ans. Son journal de campagne Écrits sur le Canada contient des commentaires savoureux sur le choc des cultures, la corruption, l’Art de la guerre, le sens de l’honneur, et l’incompétence des militaires en général et du genre humain en particulier.

Bougainvillae spectabilis – a French aristocrat in the War of the Conquest

Before being honoured by having a magnificent shrub named after him (Bougainvillae spectabilis), Louis-Antoine de Bougainville was a soldier, General Montcalm’s aide-de-camp, an Iroquois warrior, a diplomat, an interpreter, a mathematician, a geographer, a lawyer and, incidentally, a French aristocrat who played an important role in several battles of the Seven Years War. His war diary Écrits sur le Canada contains some pithy comments about culture shock, corruption, the art of war, the sense of honour and the incompetence of military men in general and the human race in particular.
